Time of Change- May 28

For your final readings of Times of Change, I would like you to set aside some time on Monday (Memorial Day) to read the choices above. Once you are done, I would like for you to post in your blog a note to the men and women on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. After what you have learned over the past few days, and what you saw when we went to D.C., what would you want to say to them?

Dear Men and Woman that served in Vietnam,
You think many people don't appreciate what you did for your country going all the way over to Vietnam to fight, but I do. You put your life on the line for our country and you should be proud. Thousands of Americans have you to thank for your bravery. You and hundreds of other men and woman spent years in Vietnam, putting yourself through pain and misery and I appreciate your suffering. Thank for all that you did for this country.

Time of Change- Wednesday

What challenges does Jack Smith face as a soldier in Vietnam? (a bulleted list is fine)
- he has trouble adjusting to all the guns and sounds.
- they were morning a lot
How does Smith’s attitude toward war change?

he learns to suck it up and just fight because that is the way it is there.

This song by Country Joe and the Fish became one of the first protest songs of the Vietnam Era. Read the lyrics to the song, and then respond to the following:

What is the song asking the “big strong men to do”?
he is asking them to fight in the war
… the “generals” to do?
he is asking them to show that they are a good general and this is their time to shine.
… “Wall Street” to do?
to supply the army the weapons and make money
… “mothers” to do?
to send their sons and husbands off the veitnam
Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or anti-war sentiment.

- whopee, were all going to die

- to have your boy come home in a box

- what are we fighting for? dont ask me, i dont give a damn

- there aint no times to wonder why

Time of Change- Tuesday

Look up both words in the title of the short essay. What do they mean?
Dubious- doubtful Crusade- any war carried on under papal sanction.
Relate the title to the reading.

What is Warren saying?
that it was a mission that had no hope and it was very unlikely that we would win
How do you think this will relate to the rest of our study if Vietnam?
that it might not be a good war, just sad
What is the overall theme of Vuong-Riddick's poem?
That they was a lot going on during this time and a lot of people were dying
What is the main thesis of the essay?
that the beginning of the war has always been a controversy
What was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution?
said that That the Congress approves and supports the determination of the President, as Commander in Chief, to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.
What evidence does the author give to support his thesis?
he says man of the different theories and what happened
How does this link to the theme of the first reading, “A Dubious Crusade”?

MLK- Education

In my research, I found that in the 1980's the African Americans and Hispanics enrollment rate were down but they are increasing slowly. In 2003 the statistics are still not even. African Americans and Hispanics are still behind by almost 40,000 people. Today, African Americans and Hispanics have come a long way. The graduate rates are almost equal for all races. In 2003, the drop outs rates are very high for Hispanics but equal for whites and blacks. This is probably because if they can not speech English, they are going to have a hard time learning in an English speeching school.

MLK- TIME article

Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?
-for freeing whites from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race.

Was King "the right man at the right time"?
- yes, it couldnt of happened without him, African Americans would not have gone as far as they did.

Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?
- No, i think he would be happy. It shows how strong he is and how hard he fought.

Civil Disobedience

Would you have been able to use civil disobedience and non-violence?

I would be fine protesting, until some one used violence against me. It would be very hard for me to let some one push me out of the way and me not do anything back. If the police would leave us alone then i would just go my way way protesting. If they used force against me i would be very insulted. It is not O.K. for them to use violence and not expect us to fight back.
